Bad Animals
Tingling in
a Bad Way
Monster films have, over the years, lent themselves to gimmicks, some of which worked more successfully than others.
One unusual example of this phenomenon is The Tingler (1959), a Castle film starring horror great Vincent Price. The flick revolves around a centipede-like creature (the tingler) that takes up residence in the human spine. The only way to dislodge the creature is to scream.
At one point in the film, a tingler is removed from a woman's spine and escapes. It crawls across the theater screen and becomes
"loose" in the theater. From the screen, Price exhorts audience members to scream for their lives.
At this critical moment, the screen goes black and theater personnel triggered vibrators hidden in patrons' seats. The activated devices simulated the effect of a tingler taking root.
Undoubtedly, a good scream was had by all.

Critters Strike Back
Considering how poorly we treat many animals, it's not hard to envision a fed-up band of creatures ganging up on us for revenge. That basic idea has inspired many of the all-time greatest tales of terror.

Revenge of the Reptiles
In 1972's Frogs, Ray Milland stars as Jason Crockett, a nature-hating, disabled millionaire who lives on an island. On the ocassion of his birthday, Pickett Smith (Sam Elliot) and others visits Crockett. Nature (including poisonous frogs) decides to get payback by wrecking Crockett's party.

Revenge of the Rodents
Many great horror stories feature deadly rats that attack in packs. One of the most chilling is "The Graveyard Rats" by Henry Kuttner, which first appeared in 1936 in Weird Tales magazine.
The short story features an unscrupulous cemetery caretaker who supplements his income by snatching valuables from the corpses he plants. When rats chew through a coffin and drag off a body just before he can nab a valuable ring, the incensed scoundrel chases after the rats and the body, crawling into an underground labrynth. Bad move.
The gripping, quick-paced tale of his journey through the lair of the graveyard rats is a classic.
