Tingling in
a Bad Way
Monster films have, over the years, lent themselves to gimmicks, some of which worked more successfully than others.
One unusual example of this phenomenon is The Tingler (1959), a Castle film starring horror great Vincent Price. The flick revolves around a centipede-like creature (the tingler) that takes up residence in the human spine. The only way to dislodge the creature is to scream.
At one point in the film, a tingler is removed from a woman's spine and escapes. It crawls across the theater screen and becomes
"loose" in the theater. From the screen, Price exhorts audience members to scream for their lives.
At this critical moment, the screen goes black and theater personnel triggered vibrators hidden in patrons' seats. The activated devices simulated the effect of a tingler taking root.
Undoubtedly, a good scream was had by all.
